Preparing for a Dutch study permit

For a university or higher professional education programme, the educational institution normally acts as the recognised sponsor for the study residence permit. Admission and residence are related but separate decisions: an offer of a place does not itself grant permission to live in the Netherlands.

Ask the international office which permit route it will use, what it submits to the IND and what you must provide. The institution can give its own document deadline, which may be earlier than your intended travel date.

The IND requires applicants to meet current study conditions, including sufficient financial means. Your institution should explain which evidence it accepts and how to submit it. Check the IND requirements directly if a document or source of funds is unusual.

Also confirm whether your nationality requires an MVV. If so, the entry step and the residence decision need to be coordinated before travel. Keep your admission, payment and application communications together.

Ask the institution when and where to collect a residence document and what to do if your start date changes. Once in the Netherlands, registration, a BSN and health insurance questions may still need attention according to your situation.

A study permit also has conditions about continuing the programme and working alongside it. Read the IND’s current permit information before accepting work or changing courses.
