Registering after you arrive

People settling in the Netherlands register in the Personal Records Database, or BRP, with the municipality where they live. People who need a Dutch citizen service number but are not becoming residents may instead use the Non-residents Records Database, or RNI.

Your expected length of stay helps determine which route fits. Read the official guidance before booking: choosing an RNI desk simply because it has an earlier appointment may be wrong if you are actually moving to live in the Netherlands.

For resident registration, use the website of the municipality where you will live to find its appointment and document instructions. The municipality may need proof of identity and information about your address and civil status. Requirements for documents issued abroad can vary.

For an RNI registration, check which RNI desk you can visit and what its booking process asks for. Bring the documents specified by the official desk, and keep copies of appointment confirmations in case you need to follow up.

Registration is the route through which you receive a BSN. Check that your recorded details are accurate because public services may use them later. If your address or circumstances change, ask the relevant municipality or RNI desk how to update the record.

Registration is separate from a residence permit. If your nationality and purpose of stay require an IND application, follow that process as well. A registration appointment on its own does not grant a right to reside.
