Joining a partner or family member

The IND separates partner and family applications by relationship and by the sponsor’s residence situation. A partner, minor child and other family member should not be treated as one interchangeable route. Open the IND page for the exact relationship before collecting documents.

The person already in the Netherlands is often the sponsor. The sponsor’s residence status and income can affect the application. The applicant’s nationality can also affect whether an MVV is needed before travelling.

Plan together who will supply identity documents, evidence of the relationship and sponsor information. The IND route page lists the evidence for that particular application; it may also explain requirements for legalisation or translation of documents issued abroad.

Check the current sponsor conditions before booking appointments or travel. If a document is missing, confirm whether the IND accepts a later submission rather than assuming that an informal explanation will be enough.
