Do you need an MVV before travelling?

An MVV is a visa that lets you travel to the Netherlands for a longer stay while your residence permit process is arranged. It is not the residence permit itself. In many cases the entry visa and residence permit are requested together, so the steps should be planned as one process.

The IND decides whether an MVV is required for your nationality and residence purpose. Being offered a job, admitted to a course or joining family does not by itself answer the MVV question. Start with the specific residence route, then check the IND entry rules for that route.

The IND lists exemptions and explains where an application can be submitted. Some applicants have a sponsor in the Netherlands, such as an employer, educational institution or family member. Ask that sponsor which part of the application it handles and which documents you must provide.

If an MVV is required, the visa is normally collected through a Dutch representation abroad after the application is approved. Confirm the location and timing with the IND instructions for your own case. Do not rely on a general travel checklist or another person’s timeline.

Before acting, confirm three things: the correct residence purpose, whether your nationality is exempt from the MVV requirement, and who is responsible for submitting the application. The answer can change if your circumstances or intended residence route change.
