Getting a BSN and DigiD

A BSN is a personal identification number used when you deal with Dutch public bodies. It is issued through registration in the BRP or, where appropriate, the RNI. You do not need to purchase a number from a private service.

Start by deciding which registration route applies to your stay. Check the appointment requirements with your municipality or RNI desk, then confirm that the details on your registration record are correct.

DigiD lets you sign in to many Dutch public services. Having a BSN does not automatically create a DigiD account. The official DigiD website explains who can apply and which details and activation steps are needed.

Apply through the official DigiD route once you meet its requirements. Follow the activation instructions carefully; the steps may depend on where you live and the details available in your registration record.

Keep your DigiD credentials and activation details to yourself. Public services may ask you to identify yourself, but you should enter login details only through the official service you intended to use.

If a name, address or other registration detail is incorrect, correct the underlying record through the responsible registration authority. If your DigiD access stops working, use the help and recovery instructions on the official DigiD website.
